What is Sinusitis?

Sinusitis means that the nose and sinuses are inflamed, which prevents normal mucus drainage. There are several different forms of sinusitis and it most commonly has a bacterial or viral cause.

The viral form can come along with a common cold. Bacterial sinusitis, on the other hand, may be referred to as a secondary infection when it is caused by something else. In other words, the child may have been sick, and this allowed bacterial infection to develop in the sinuses. Sinusitis can also be driven by allergies. Allergic fungal rhino-sinusitis is triggered by an allergy to fungi and often occurs together with nasal polyps. These infections can be the result of:

  • Viruses
  • Bacteria
  • Fungi

Classification of Sinusitis

Generally sinusitis is classified into three sub-types depending on the cause:

  • Chronic rhino-sinusitis without nasal polyps, which occurs in around 60% of people.
  • Chronic rhino-sinusitis with nasal polyps, which occurs in around 20-30% of people. This type is more likely to be associated with asthma and aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease.
  • Allergic fungal rhino-sinusitis, which occurs in around 10-20% of people.

Symptoms of Sinusitis

Sinusitis may be confused for a cold because of similar symptoms. But, with sinusitis you will have pain under the eyes, above the bridge of the nose, and in the upper teeth. These are areas where the sinuses are located. In addition to pain, you may experience:

  • Fever of 101°F
  • Loss of sense of smell
  • Thick yellow or green mucous
  • Bad breath
  • Moist cough

A cold may go away; but it can leave you with sinusitis. So if you have cold symptoms for more than 10 days or if your symptoms suddenly get worse; you may have a sinus infection and it is an indicator that you should see an E.N.T. doctor. E.N.T. treatment for Sinusitis

If this is your first visit to the E.N.T. doctor, a complete medical history will be in order. When you see the E.N.T., it is important to let him/her know when the symptoms first started and how they progressed.

The E.N.T. will first examine your nose to look for sources of obstruction. In addition to a physical and visual exam, he/she may request tests such as a CT scan, an MRI, or an endoscopic exam.

Medical Intervention:

  • Depending on the type of sinusitis you have, the E.N.T. may prescribe antibiotics. Viral infections don’t respond to antibiotics, so an antibiotic might not be prescribed. For chronic bacterial sinusitis, several different antibiotics may need to be taken. If your sinusitis is fungal, an anti-fungal medication may be prescribed.
  • Decongestants, saline sprays or oral corticosteroids may be prescribed to reduce inflammation. Pain can be controlled with over-the-counter NSAIDs.
  • Surgery may be required if the infection is caused by structural problems with the sinuses. Balloon sinuplasty, septoplasty or functional endoscopic sinus surgery may be necessary.
